John Clancey, an American human rights lawyer living in Hong Kong, was also taken away in a major arrest in Hong Kong on Jan. 6, the first American citizen to be arrested under the National Security Law since the law was implemented in July last year, and his law firm, Ho Tse Wai Law Offices, was raided by Hong Kong police.
As the gray-haired Kwan was led away from his law firm, he told reporters, propping up his cane, “I will continue to work for democracy and human rights in Hong Kong.”
He is the treasurer of the organization Democracy Power, which coordinated last year’s primary election for the democratic camp. He is also chairman of the Asian Human Rights Commission and secretary for international affairs on the board of the China Rights Lawyers Concern Group.
