More than 50 pro-democracy activists arrested in Hong Kong, U.S. Congressman voices concern

More than 50 pro-democracy activists were arrested on Wednesday (6) by Hong Kong’s State Security Department, saying they were involved in “subversion of state power,” including Dai Yaoting, a former associate professor of law at the University of Hong Kong, and Yang Yueqiao, a former member of the Legislative Council, Wu Zhiwei, and Lin Zhuoting, who were involved in leading the pro-democracy primary election. U.S. Congressmen expressed concern about the incident.

Republican Congressman Buck criticized that the central government continues to suppress democracy and he would stand with the “freedom fighters” in Hong Kong. Senator Blackburn, who also belongs to the Republican Party, said that Hong Kong’s “freedom fighters” may be convicted for holding democratic elections and may face life imprisonment, describing this as just the beginning of the central government’s actions.

Kristian Odebjer, chairman of the Swedish Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong, said on social media sites that what is happening in Hong Kong is a political crackdown that has a significant negative impact on business activities. Wu Derbin also said that the situation of the rule of law in Hong Kong has legitimate doubts, coupled with the deterioration of Hong Kong’s image, and asked why to stay in the increasingly expensive Hong Kong to do business.
