The outbreak of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) variant in England has extended, with the number of confirmed cases exceeding 60,000 for the first time today. England’s chief medical officer Whitty said, according to statistics, from the end of last year to the beginning of this year, England area households for every 50 people infected with the disease.
The United Kingdom from December 29 last year, the number of single-day confirmed exceeded 50,000 for the first time, has not fallen below 50,000, seven consecutive days confirmed more than 50,000, today exceeded the 60,000 mark, as many as 69,916 confirmed, a total of 2,774,479 confirmed. In the UK, 830 new people died within 28 days of being diagnosed with the infection today, more than twice as many as 407 people yesterday, and a total of 76,305 people have died.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who yesterday announced the third closure of England from midnight, held a press conference today with England’s Chief Medical Officer Chris Whitty.
Whitty said, according to statistics, between December 27 last year and January 2 this year, the average household in England, 1 in 50 people infected with the disease, which is “a very large number”.
At the peak of the first wave of the epidemic last year, the number of people diagnosed in the UK never exceeded 7,000 per day. Although the real number should be higher due to the lack of screening energy at that time, it is estimated that at the end of March last year, the maximum number of new diagnoses per day was around 10,000.
Whitty said there was a 70% increase in confirmed cases in the UK in the 2 weeks ending Dec. 30 last year. The multiplier effect of the mutated virus and winter led to a “sharp rise” in the number of confirmed cases in December, even in the northeast and northwest of England, where the number of confirmed cases was previously low, and the number of hospitalizations grew very quickly.
He warned that the situation is quite worrying because “winter is not over yet”.
Johnson wanted to bring some good news for the people, stressing that the closure of the city would make the situation better. He said the government will get more people vaccinated during the closure period, putting up a shield for the elderly and the weaker ones.
Johnson said 1.1 million people have been vaccinated in England, and 1.3 million in the UK as a whole. He said, “More than 650,000 of them are over 80 years old, accounting for 23 percent of England’s over-80 population.” He said that this means that 1/4 of the most vulnerable groups have been vaccinated in the last 2 or 3 weeks.
In addition, England closed the city for the third time, hitting the retail sector hard. Finance Minister Rishi Sunak (Rishi Sunak) today announced a funding scheme that will give aid to restaurant and hotel operators, up to £9,000.
