China has seen an increase in the number of cases of pneumonia in Wuhan, 17 of which are local cases. The outbreak broke out in Hebei province on Monday, while 11 confirmed cases in Shijiazhuang city included some patients attending activities in xiaoguozhuang village, which was listed as a high-risk area. The epidemic continues to expand in Liaoning. One super-spuser passed 33 cases in Dalian, and 11 cases were tested before wuhan pneumonia was confirmed, raising doubts about the standard of nucleic acid testing.
Of the new cases of wuhan pneumonia in China, 14 were from Hebei province. Most of the patients lived in Xiaoguozhuang village in Shijiazhuang city. Many people attended weddings and dinners. Some of the cases have come from the city of Xingtai.
There have also been 30 new asymptomatic cases in Hebei province. Xiaoguo village is classified as a high-risk area, the only one in China. A state of war was declared in Shijiazhuang and Xingtai, and all large-scale events involving crowds were suspended.
Liaoning has also seen local outbreaks. The owner of a local business building became a super communicator. He attended a family party before the onset of illness, and all ten people were infected in the party. The infected people in the party then infected other people in the commercial building and many people in Dalian Medical Hospital, resulting in at least 33 people being infected, and the number of cases related to the commercial building was as high as 65.
In some cases, 11 nucleic acid tests were performed before confirmation was made. The municipal headquarters has decided to implement “14+7” home quarantine for 21 days for people living at home and in centralized isolation. 4 nucleic acid tests should be conducted during the period, and only when all tests are negative can the isolation be lifted. If someone goes out without permission during the quarantine period, they will be sent to the quarantine hotel for a new 21-day quarantine period.
Mr. Huang, a resident of Liaoning province, suffers from bile duct disease. He told the BBC he was unable to travel to big cities such as Liaoning and Dalian for medical treatment because he was quarantined from time to time, fearing that his treatment would be delayed.
Mr. Huang: “If I go to Dalian, I won’t be able to come back. I’ll be trapped in Dalian and be quarantined when I come back. I can’t even go there now, because there are checkpoints on the highway, I’m afraid you can’t go without special circumstances. You are generally not allowed to go to Dalian or Shenyang. You’ll be in trouble when you get back. You’ll be quarantined for 21 days, at your own expense.”
Expert: Eleven nucleic acid tests are extremely unusual
Ren Ruihong, a former executive of the Critical disease relief program at the Red Cross Foundation of China, said the 11 nucleic acid tests were highly unusual and reflected that they were not the only standard.
Ren Ruihong: “I haven’t heard of it 11 times. We’ve heard of a few that came out negative five or six times before. Any virus has an incubation period. Eleven is latent for how long? Why is the patient still testing over and over again? If he is still testing, we think he may still have some clinical symptoms, and we should not use nucleic acid test to confirm the diagnosis, we can do a chest X-ray to confirm whether the patient is diagnosed or not. There is no need to take the test again. It will put a lot of pressure on the patient psychologically.”
She stressed that no test is 100 percent accurate.
Ren RuiHONG: “The over-reliance on the function and accuracy of nucleic acid testing as a clinical basis. My guess is that they are using this as a basis for large-scale accounting testing. Generally in the domestic, found a case (Wuhan pneumonia), basically the whole community or even the whole district should be nucleic acid testing. If we tell people that there are some people who just can’t detect it, it’s probably not good enough for them. Some people may be negative all the time, there are clinical cases, but they are infected. Any test has an error tolerance rate.”
Because officials do not trust the accuracy of nucleic acid testing, many areas have repeated nucleic acid testing, Shenyang in a week to carry out twice nucleic acid testing, on January 4 to mobilize the city’s medical personnel for testing for residents.
