The first case of a highly infectious British variant of the virus has emerged in New York

Gov. Cuomo announced Monday that a patient in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., tested positive for the British variant of the Coronavirus.

The patient, a man in his 60s, was found to have tested positive for the mutant strain of COVID-19. The mutated virus, which is highly contagious, was first detected in Britain and has recently been found in carriers in The US states of California and Colorado. The Saratoga Springs case was the first in New York State.

Mr. Cuomo said in a conference call Monday afternoon that the patient was recovering. He reportedly has no record of foreign travel and is affiliated with the Local store N.Fox Jewelers. Three other people in the jewellery shop fell ill, but it was not clear if they were carrying the British variant as well.

Cuomo said the patient had no recent history of foreign travel, suggesting community transmission. Anyone who visited the jewellery store on 18 December solstice 24 should be tested for the virus.

Cuomo added that New York state is currently conducting 5,000 tests for the British variant and so far has not tested positive.
