Lu Siwei, a Sichuan rights lawyer who had been entrusted by the families of 12 Hong Kong people, received a notice from the Sichuan Provincial Department of Justice on the first working day of 2021 to revoke his lawyer’s practicing certificate.
The notice stated that he had repeatedly made inappropriate comments on the Internet, spanning a long period of time and with a large number of posts, which seriously damaged the image of the lawyer profession and caused a bad social impact, and had violated the relevant provisions of China’s Lawyers Law and the Measures for the Administration of Lawyer Practice.
The authorities said that Lu Siwei has the right to make statements, plead and request a hearing, and if he requests a hearing, he has to do so within three days of receiving the notification letter.
Lu Siwei said he believed that the revocation of his license to practice law was related to his involvement in the case of 12 Hong Kong people.
In the early days of the 12 Hong Kong people being detained in Shenzhen for allegedly smuggling, Lo Si-wai was one of the lawyers appointed by their families, who went to the Shenzhen Yantian Detention Center several times to request a meeting with his clients, but was always refused, he later disclosed the progress of the case and court information on the Internet.
The 12 Hong Kong people were subsequently assigned official lawyers, two of the minor defendants were transferred back to Hong Kong at the end of last year, and the other 10 were sentenced to 7 months to 3 years. The official media said that each pleaded guilty to a fine.
