People submit forms to receive the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) vaccine at a temporary vaccination site in Chaoyang District, Beijing, January 3, 2021.
Chinese official media released ‘instructions for vaccination against the new coronavirus’ on January 3, excluding the elderly population over 60 years old, people with High blood pressure and diabetic patients from the vaccination population. In Europe and the US, the first batch of the new coronavirus vaccination is targeted at high-risk groups including the elderly and infirm, and the Chinese notice has once again raised serious doubts about the efficacy of China’s domestic vaccine.
The Pfizer vaccine currently being administered in the U.S. and Europe is set for ages 16 to 85 years old. In Europe and the U.S., vaccination has already begun in all countries, and the vaccine is administered to the elderly and at-risk groups first, with the former referring to the elderly and those who are physically weak, and the latter mostly referring to front-line personnel such as medical and nursing staff who are often exposed to the virus.
The Beijing authorities approved on December 31 the launch of the new inactivated vaccine developed by Sinopharm, which has not yet completed the third phase of trials. The official explanation is pending “further clinical trials”.
The official media CCTV 3 released the “New Coronavirus Vaccination Notice”, which includes: 1, the current age limit for vaccination is 18 to 59 years old, while other age groups need to wait for further clinical trials; 2, pregnant women, breastfeeding women, and people with uncontrollable hypertension and diabetes complications are not suitable for vaccination.
Moreover, according to Chinese media reports, in addition to the above restrictions, people who are not suitable for vaccination include those who are in the acute phase of diseases such as fever or infection, those suffering from immunodeficiency or immune disorders, and those with severe liver and kidney diseases, malignant tumors, etc.
Some analysis suggests that the new Chinese crown vaccine restricts people over 60 years of age from being vaccinated, and those with underlying diseases such as hypertension and diabetes from being vaccinated, with more than a dozen contraindicated conditions! Only people aged 18 to 59, who are usually considered to be in good health, can be vaccinated; can half of such a population be vaccinated? The question that arises is how can herd immunity be achieved and how can high-risk groups be protected? Otherwise, what is the point of such a vaccine?
China’s domestic vaccine has consistently raised doubts about the safety and efficacy of its vaccine because it has not completed Phase III trials, and because no complete data have been published.
