Britain confirmed 54,990 new cases on Sunday, the sixth consecutive day with more than 50,000 confirmed cases, and British Prime Minister Johnson warned on Sunday that stricter epidemic control restrictions than Level 4 could be implemented in the coming weeks to curb the out-of-control variant of the virus.
AFP quoted British health authorities as informing on Sunday that nearly 55,000 new cases were confirmed in the UK, the sixth consecutive day with more than 50,000 new cases confirmed. With 454 new deaths in a single day, Britain also has one of the highest number of deaths from the new coronavirus in Europe, with a cumulative total of 75,024 cases.
British Prime Minister Johnson said in an interview with the BBC on Sunday that with the rise in new cases, the implementation of stricter epidemic control restrictions than Level 4 cannot be ruled out in the coming weeks; however, Johnson stressed that schools are safe places and that students should attend school in areas where classes are allowed to resume.
Johnson said he still thinks the situation will get better before spring and hopes that millions of people will be vaccinated in the next three months. But Johnson also said that “action may have to be taken in the coming weeks, and stricter rules will be imposed in some areas. If the closure is declared again in England, it will be the 3rd closure since March and November last year.
The government postponed the resumption of classes in elementary school in London and surrounding areas scheduled for Monday after the Christmas holiday, and switched to online teaching. But elementary school in most parts of England opened as scheduled, with some teachers’ unions calling for a wider closure.
Johnson said Britain began vaccinating people Monday with the latest approved vaccine developed by Oxford University and AstraZeneca, the first batch of 530,000 doses, and he hopes to complete tens of millions of doses in three months.
