Before New Year’s Eve, Lai Chi-ying was remanded to prison by the Court of Final Appeal and Chow Ting was transferred to a maximum security prison as a “Class A offender”, two pieces of bad news that made the New Year a sad one for Hong Kong people. The first is that the judge’s comments in the courtroom gave indications that an appeal might be denied, leaving us with little hope; the second is that a delicate little girl like Chow Ting could not possibly need a maximum security prison in order to put the heavily armed guards at ease.
The chaining of Lai Chi-ying and the treatment of Zhou Ting as a Class A prisoner are both clearly humiliating, meant to seriously undermine their personal dignity and make Lai Chi-ying and Zhou Ting unable to hold their heads up in front of the world.
The autocrats never understand that human dignity is not obtained by the bowing down of others; human dignity comes from inner strength, from faith, from the support of the people.
The protest movement of Hong Kong people has come to a difficult stage. It is an objective fact that all mass political movements do not have smooth sailing, they have setbacks and low tides, as seen throughout history. If you want to change the old world, it is an illusion to expect the masters of the old world to meekly withdraw from the stage of his history. The objective situation is constantly changing, and the subjective consciousness will also shift, under the two sides of the game, not always forward, is three steps forward and two steps back, is sometimes turn left, sometimes turn right, sometimes take the offensive, sometimes take the defensive, this is the law of historical development.
Last year, the anti-China movement was very strong, and the Lin Zheng government was at its wits’ end, who knew that the Wuhan epidemic had come, and that the gathering of people was not conducive to epidemic prevention. Because of Lin Zheng’s incompetence, the Chinese Communist Party forced itself to take action. The Chinese Communist Party used the legal status of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress to come up with a national security law, which overrides the common law of Hong Kong and directly suppresses the resistance of Hong Kong people.
Xi Jinping paid a heavy political price for the national security law, and the brutal nature of the Chinese Communist Party was exposed to the world, and the false image of “one country, two systems” was revealed to the world.
In this way, Hong Kong people’s democratic struggle has come to a deadlock, that is, we suddenly lost our original means of resistance, rallies and marches could not be organized, movement leaders have been liquidated, the government has struck out, leaving no room for the fight against the righteous citizens, and we have no room to fight back for the time being.
This is all reality. The question is not what happened, the question is when the situation changes, how do we reorganize our own team and adjust our response in response to the changing situation.
On New Year’s Day, the pro-democracy camp held a car procession to demand the release of political prisoners.
On New Year’s Day, some people also went to the top of the Lion Rock to erect the “FAITH” lights to express their determination to fight forever. Some people shouted slogans in the dense crowd while enjoying the illuminations in Tsim Sha Tsui, and although the police heard them, they could do nothing about it.
The problem is not that these small-scale actions had any immediate and spectacular effect, the problem is that we made it happen, and made it happen in a way that we thought was appropriate and safe.
The epidemic will surely pass, and there is plenty of room for resistance outside the scope of the National Security Law. The time is not yet right, so everything is pressed into service, and when the time comes, anything can happen.
In times of difficulty, the most common emotions are frustration, discouragement, depression, and despair, which are all human. What the Chinese Communist Party and the Lam administration want most is for Hong Kong people to be pessimistic and fearful, and to give up.
Everything depends on our own attitude. We have to give up, of course, it is easy, to persist, of course, it is difficult, but we have to give up the easy to take the difficult, which is the Lai Chi-ying, Huang Zhifeng and Zhou Ting who would rather go to jail, rather than bow down.
When the situation is bad, it is not the time to fight hard, but not hard, but also passive resistance, can not cooperate, can give the Chinese Communist Party and Lin Zheng touch a soft nail. The car patrol of the People’s Front, the light signals of the Lion Rock, and the shouting of “Death to the whole family of the black police” in the crowd are all ways to at least tell the autocratic rulers that the people are still awake and the resistance will not stop.
These heroes of the struggle, Lai Chi-ying, Wong Chi-fung and Chow Ting, have taken up the heavy responsibility given to them by the times, suffering and carrying the cross for us, and there are many more famous and unknown people in jail and in exile. We have no right to leave them in prison to fend for themselves in times of trouble, to let them suffer in vain. Later, when they come out, they will find that all the people of Hong Kong have run away, full of desolation, the regime is arrogant, the blue camp is full of lights, while the people of Hong Kong, for whom they have been hurt and suffered, have all become a scattered plate of sand, everyone cowering back in their own little world, bending their heads and ears to live, so that we are all ungrateful people.
Remember what happened here, bury the hatred in your heart, never forget, never give up, this is the way we support Fatty Lai, support Wong Chi Fung and Chow Ting people. What is important to understand is that everything we do is not for them, it is for ourselves.
