After being named by hundreds of practitioners for plagiarism, Guo Jingming, the Chinese writer and director of the popular “Little Times” series, officially admitted to plagiarism and apologized today, followed by another named TV producer, Yu Zheng, who also apologized on Weibo for plagiarizing Qiong Yao’s work years ago. Some insiders say that the Chinese Communist Party officials will probably take action on the case, and the two apologized in time for the end of the year for fear of repercussions.

According to the Central News Agency, on Dec. 21, Yu Fei, Song Fangjin and more than 100 other writers, directors, producers and authors from mainland China publicly signed a letter naming Guo Jingming and Yu as plagiarists, and appearing as mentors and guests on the show to hype the topic inside and outside the show in order to chase clicks and ratings and gain attention.

After several days of silence, Guo Jingming posted a message on his Weibo account today, admitting to plagiarism and apologizing. He admitted that his novel “Dreams of Flowers” was found to have been plagiarized by a court in 2006 from writer Zhuang Yu’s novel “Inside and Outside the Circle”, and Guo Jingming had to pay the other party RMB 200,000 (about NTD 850,000) and apologize in the newspaper.

However, Guo Jingming said that he could not face his own heart at that time, and his youthful vanity and resistance made him refuse to admit his mistake. Now he chooses to face his past mistakes and apologize to all the readers and partners he let down, to Zhuang Yu, the public, all the original creators and to the hard-won creative environment in China, hoping that everyone will take this as a warning and refuse to plagiarize and respect creativity.

At the same time, he said he would compensate Zhuang Yu for all the royalties and all the revenue he had received online and offline after the publication of “Dreams of Flowers”. If the other party does not accept, he will donate the money to public charity, to accept the public’s supervision.

In response, Zhuang Yu responded that “this is indeed a belated apology”, but she accepted Guo Jingming’s apology.

The company is also under pressure to apologize for the plagiarism in a later post on Weibo. 2014, Yu Zheng’s “Gonglock Liancheng” was sued by Qiong Yao for plagiarism of “Plum Blossom” for 5 million, and in 2015, the Beijing High People’s Court ruled that the plagiarism was found. But Yu Zheng refused to apologize.

Yu Zheng apologized to Qiong Yao on Weibo today, saying, “This apology comes only now, not because I am unwilling to admit my mistake, but because I lack sufficient courage.”

According to Mirror Weekly, after the boycott statement was issued, some informed sources revealed on Weibo that the co-signing incident occurred mainly because of the Chinese Communist Party’s official intention to investigate thoroughly, and then a program production unit said it would cut Yu Zheng’s footage, and now Yu Zheng also announced his withdrawal from the “I am an actor 3” program, as things are getting bigger and bigger, it is clear that the rumors of official interference are not empty. It is understood that when Yu Zheng was sued by Qiong Yao for plagiarism of his work “Plum Blossom”, he was also boycotted by a hundred screenwriters in the industry, and was eventually able to return in one piece, if not for the possibility of official action, Yu Zheng and Guo Jingming should not issue an apology only after many years.
