The American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) today released its 2020 Year in Review video, in which Director Li Yingjie reviewed the progress and said that the people’s friendship has brought the United States and Taiwan together and that he looks forward to seeing the U.S.-Taiwan relationship continue to grow and thrive in 2021. As the 5 mayors are all present in the film, only missing Taichung City Mayor Lu Hsiu-yen, there is speculation that it is related to the recent meeting fiasco at Taichung City Hall. DPP legislator Wang Dingyu believes that “the KMT’s move towards ‘pro-China and anti-US’ seems impossible to turn back”.
AIT looks back on 2020 Li Yingjie: Hopes U.S.-Taiwan relations will grow and thrive in 2021
The American Institute in Taiwan released its 2020 Year in Review film through Facebook this morning, and Director Li Yingjie said he often says that what binds the United States and Taiwan together is actually the camaraderie between the United States, the people of Taiwan, and the people. This past year has been a challenging one for the entire international community.
Li also gave special thanks to the many friends who have made his life better “and made the U.S.-Taiwan relationship thrive. Throughout the year, we have worked together, celebrated together, mourned together, and accomplished much together. While we may not see everything the same way, we “continue to find common ground and pursue the common interests of the United States and Taiwan, building on the solid foundation of mutual respect and shared values. Li also “looks forward to seeing the U.S.-Taiwan relationship continue to grow and thrive in 2021,” and wished everyone a happy New Year.
The Liberty Times reports that the AIT’s New Year’s Eve retrospective film features many people, including President Tsai Ing-wen, Vice President Lai Ching-teh, National Security Council Secretary General Gu Li-hsiung, Presidential Secretary General David Lee, Foreign Minister Wu Chiu-sup, Representative to the U.S. Hsiao Mei-chin, health and Welfare Minister Chen Shih-chung, Culture Minister Lee Yong-teh, the mayors of the five aforementioned cities, Councilor Deng Zhen-zhong, Retreat Chairman Feng Shi-kuan, Academia Sinica President Liao Jun-zhi, Foreign Trade Association Chairman Huang Chi-fang, former Minister of Science and Technology Chen Liang-ki, Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) legislator Gao Chia-yu, KMT Chairman Jiang Chih-shen, and TSMC founder Chang Chung-mou.
The background music of the film is the Taiwanese folk song Wang Chun Feng, played by the famous cellist Kuo Chi-Chieh at AIT.

In the greeting video released by AIT today, Li Yingjie and the mayors of the group photo in order from north to south, the popular party’s Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je, KMT’s New Taipei Mayor Hou You-yi, DPP’s Taoyuan Mayor Zheng Wen-can, DPP’s Tainan Mayor Huang Wei-chieh, DPP’s Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-mai and other municipal mayors, one by one, appear in the film, but only missing with AIT in December 16 meeting during the breach of prior agreement fiasco KMT’s Taichung Mayor Lu Hsiu-yen, sparking speculation from all walks of life.
In this regard, Wang Dingyu joined the issue discussion through Facebook, “Huh? The AIT’s New Year’s greeting film, the six are not only Taichung Lu Xiuyan yeah?”
Wang Dingyu stressed that Mayor Lu’s disrespect has nothing to do with opposition to the U.S. pig, “is related to the breach of trust in the form of agreed meetings. Do not think that the United States regime change, wash the face of the current AIT director does not matter, the KMT domestic vicious fights to foreign relations does not matter,” and bluntly said that the United States does not have the KMT such habits, and AIT on behalf of the U.S. government, Lu Xiuyan backstabbing vicious not Li Yingjie, but the U.S. government.
Wang Dingyu believes that the KMT’s move toward “pro-China and anti-Americanism” seems to be irreversible, and finally asks, “Do you think this film’s unique omission is inadvertent or intentional?”
