U.S. Embassy: Pence’s January trip to Israel long cancelled

The U.S. media has recently reported that Vice President Mike Pence plans to depart on a trip to Israel immediately after certifying the election results on Jan. 6. But the U.S. Embassy in Israel said recently that Pence’s January trip to Israel has been canceled.

The Times of Israel, an online English-language Israeli newspaper, reported Dec. 30 that the U.S. Embassy in Israel said that Pence’s trip to Israel had been canceled less than two weeks before the scheduled visit. The media outlet confirmed the news through a U.S. Embassy spokesman.

Previously, U.S. media cited government documents saying Pence was scheduled to leave the United States on Jan. 6 for visits to Bahrain, Israel and Poland, returning Jan. 11.

On Jan. 6, the U.S. Congress will certify the results of this year’s presidential election. As Senate President, Pence will play an important role in this.

Recently, members of both houses of Congress have publicly stated that they will challenge the Electoral College votes in controversial swing states. It is expected that Congress will debate and vote on the issue.
