Last year at this time, Li Wenliang sent out the message “7 cases of SARS have been confirmed” in a WeChat group, one of the first warnings about the outbreak.
It has been one year since the outbreak of Wuhan pneumonia in China, and two of the first whistleblowers to expose the outbreak, Dr. Li Wenliang, have died, while Dr. Ai Fen has lost the sight in his right eye due to an eye disease. The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) officials are facing a big challenge and are putting pressure on all parties, including Ai Fen, to maintain stability.
When the virus emerged in China in late December last year, two doctors, Li Wenliang and Ai Fen, were the first to warn of the epidemic and were suppressed by the authorities, and a year later, they and their families are still under official surveillance. According to Radio Free Asia, a woman surnamed Liu, who works in the Hubei Provincial health Commission system, revealed that after Li Wenliang’s death, his widow returned to her hometown with her two children and struggled to make ends meet, and his parents are still not over the grief of their son’s death. But officials have banned them from speaking out.
Liu said that on the morning of December 30, a public number called “Erxiang” published an article on the first anniversary of Li Wenliang’s whistle blowing, which drew the attention of the official, and launched a comprehensive pressure and stability maintenance. Even Ai Fen was warned and threatened by Wang Weihua, party secretary of Wuhan Central Hospital, who took office in August, for receiving media interviews, asking her not to speak out and even asking her to delete the article.
“This person also said all the facts, and did not say anything excessive… You don’t have a theory with these people (the Chinese Communist Party).” Ms. Liu said it is a sensitive time and all negative news about the government cannot be mentioned, “You are not allowed to speak up, you can only sing praises.”
It is reported that the central hospital where Li Wenliang worked before his death was affected by the epidemic, the ophthalmology department stopped operating, and as a doctor sentinel Ai Fen, the onset of eye disease in May this year can only go to a private hospital, resulting in misdiagnosis and blindness in the right eye 2 months ago. But no one within the hospital dared to speak out on the matter.
In response, Ai Fen herself only said she was not at liberty to speak, not to make any comments, but she confirmed that her eye did lead to blindness due to misdiagnosis, and is currently unable to work.
And Wang Weihua, secretary of the party committee of Wuhan Central Hospital and deputy director of the city’s health care commission, refused to respond to any relevant information.
On December 30, 2019, Wuhan Central Hospital doctor Li Wenliang issued an alert to the outside world, reminding friends and relatives that “seven cases of SARS were confirmed in the South China Fruit and Seafood Market” and to pay attention to protection. However, he and eight other people were talked to by the Public Security Bureau and forced to sign a letter of admonishment after the news broke out.
Just half a month later, the epidemic in Wuhan got out of control, and Li Wenliang was admitted to hospital with the virus and eventually died on February 6. At least six medical staff members died and more than 300 were infected at Wuhan Central Hospital, which was hit hard during the initial outbreak. To date, there is no way to know how many people have died as a result of the epidemic.
The official concealment of the Wulong outbreak led to the global spread of the virus, with more than 1,793,000 deaths in 191 countries and territories as of December 30, 2020. Now, the Chinese Communist Party has not only denied the concealment of the epidemic in the international arena, but has also criticized other countries for not doing enough to fight the epidemic, claiming to be the most successful country in the world.
