U.K. health officials warned today that the nation is once again in the eye of the 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak, as the number of hospitalizations for the disease is now as high as it was at the peak of the outbreak in April.
A new variant of the 2019 coronavirus disease strain appears to be responsible for the recent surge in cases, adding further pressure on the National Health Service (NHS) in England.
Data from NHS England showed that 24,426 patients were seen in hospitals across the country yesterday.
The government reported yesterday that the number of new diagnoses reached a record high of 41,385 under the implementation of more extensive screening.
Simon Stevens, chief executive of the National Health Service in England, said, “Now we are once again in the eye of the storm as a second wave of the outbreak sweeps through Europe and this country.”
