Mutant strain of virus “A701V” appeared in Malaysia! Up to 85% of cases

Malaysian health Minister Noor Hisham Abdullah announced in a Facebook post today that the A701V mutant strain was present in 85% of the cases of the 3rd wave of Wuhan pneumonia (novel coronavirus disease, COVID-19) outbreak in Malaysia, and it is speculated that the new strain may become the more infectious “dominant strain”.

According to The Star Online, Noshirama said on Facebook that after the outbreak of the 3rd wave of Wuhan pneumonia in Malaysia, as many as 85% (51/60) of the cases showed the mutant strain A701V, while 100% of the cases showed the mutant strain D614G, indicating that the mutant strain A701V is spreading together with the most prevalent strain D614G.

Noshiyama explained that the mutation of the A701V virus strain is the mutation of the amino acid Alanine (Amino Acid Alanine) at position 701 on the viral echinoderm protein to Valine (Valine).

It is reported that the mutant strain A701V first appeared in cases in the fortress of Naduk (Benteng Lahad Datu) in the province of Tawau, Sabah, then spread to the entire Sabah and Peninsular Malaysia, while the United Kingdom, South Africa, Australia, the Netherlands and other places almost at the same time with the Malaysian notification of the emergence of A701V mutant virus strain. The current prevalence data for the A701V variant strain in the Global Initiative for Shared Influenza Data (GISAID) is 0.18%.

Noshiyama said experts are not yet sure what the impact of this mutation is, but since this new strain has been detected in most wave 3 infection cases, he speculated that A701V may become the more infectious and dominant strain.

In addition, the country has not yet reported the detection of the “B.1.1.7” mutant strain of the virus in cases that broke out in the UK recently.
