Two confirmed cases of a new variant of the new coronavirus first identified in the United Kingdom have been found in Canada, and the virus is becoming more infectious.
health officials in the Canadian province of Ontario said Saturday (Dec. 26) that two confirmed cases of a new variant of the neo-coronavirus first identified in the United Kingdom have been found locally in an infected couple in the southern part of the province with no known recent travel history and no contact with high-risk individuals. Ontario went into a state of closure Saturday.
Barbara Yaffe, Ontario’s deputy chief medical officer, said in a statement, “This is further evidence of the need for Ontarians to stay home as much as possible and to continue to comply with all public health warnings, including the closure measures in place across the province starting today.”
Scientists say the new crown new variant of the virus has a 40 to 70 percent higher ability to spread than the original virus. Outside of the United Kingdom, the new coronavirus has been found in countries such as Australia, Italy and the Netherlands.
In Ontario, 4,301 new cases of NIV have been confirmed in the past two days, and more than 2,000 new cases have been diagnosed in a single day for 12 consecutive days.
To prevent the spread of NNV, Canada last week extended the ban on flights from the United Kingdom until Jan. 6 next year and increased testing surveillance for travelers from South Africa, where the more infectious NNV is on the rise.
Confirmed cases of New Coronavirus in Canada have so far reached 541,616, with 14,800 deaths.
