Anti-sending in the image of the Hong Kong Police Force has suffered a sharp drop of more than 60% in the number of students joining the auxiliary police

In 2019, Hong Kong’s “anti-China” movement broke out, during which many protesters were reportedly sexually harassed, raped and maliciously beaten by Hong Kong police officers, turning the “police” job, which is supposed to protect the people, into an occupation that people are afraid of and avoid.

Because of the impact of the anti-sending democracy movement, many Hong Kong police manpower was transferred in response, the auxiliary police positions need manpower to fill; according to “Position News” reported, the auxiliary police chief superintendent Liang Shiguang said that the Hong Kong police in the past many years will recruit about 200 auxiliary police, the number of applicants usually falls between 1,000 and 1,300 people, 2019 and 2020 year, the recruitment of auxiliary police quota for 223, the number of applicants doubled compared to previous years, to 2,234 people.

The main participants of the “anti-sending” movement are young people, not to mention university students, reflecting the firm spirit of freedom and democracy pursued by the majority of young people in contemporary Hong Kong, a phenomenon that can be seen in the age group of auxiliary police candidates; Leung Sai-kwong revealed that the ratio of those under 30 years old who voted for the auxiliary police plummeted from 87% to 58%, in addition, in the past year, the number of university students joining the auxiliary police fell by more than 60%, from the past annual recruitment of 120 people plummeted to 30 to 40 people.

However, observing other age groups, the rate of candidates aged 31 to 40 years old increased to 26%, the rate of candidates aged 41 to 50 years old increased to 15%, there are rare 51-year-old candidates apply; on average, the latest class of auxiliary police candidates are mainly middle-aged, the average age of 40 years old.

In this regard, Liang Shiguang claimed that the situation reflects the experience of “social events”, the community “more recognition of the work of the auxiliary police, mission”, but also said that many auxiliary police candidates are parents, want to serve as an auxiliary police position “to teach” their children “this is a legitimate behavior, this is a very good job”.

In response to the plummeting number of college students applying for the exam, Liang Shiguang claimed that the phenomenon is related to “social events”, “especially people within the university have misconceptions about the work of the police force, but we believe that this situation is temporary”, also said the police will continue to maintain communication with college students and various sectors of society, hoping that the public understand the work of the auxiliary police.
