Hong Kong pro-communist artists apply to immigrate to Taiwan, Taiwan public opinion fears it is a Chinese Communist layout

Hong Kong’s famous film producer to Huaqiang father and son to apply for residence and settlement in Taiwan. Taiwan said the relevant authorities are reviewing the application in accordance with regulations.

Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council confirmed the news on Thursday (Dec. 24). A spokesman for the Council said that Xiang Huaqiang’s application is for “residence in Taiwan in accordance with the rules”. Xiang Huaqiang’s wife, Chen Lan, is a Taiwanese national, and “dependent residence” means settling in Taiwan with his wife’s relationship. He was accompanied by his son, Xiang Zuo.

Xiang Huaqiang was born in 1948 and is 72 years old.

The news of the family’s political ties to the Communist Party came as a surprise to outsiders. Xiang is the chairman of the China Star Group, a Hong Kong-based film and television production and distribution company, and has extensive business in mainland China, as well as extensive contacts in Chinese politics.

During Beijing’s push for a national security law in Hong Kong, the film mogul joined thousands of Hong Kong performers and cultural figures, including Jackie Chan, in a statement of support. His son, Xiang Zuo, is currently a member of the All-China Youth Federation. This organization is a “patriotic united front organization” under the leadership of the Communist Youth League.

In a Weibo post last year during Hong Kong’s anti-China campaign, Chen Lan denounced the “brainwashing” and “outrageous atrocities” of Hong Kong’s youth. She also asked the Hong Kong government to take measures to ban the wearing of masks and prevent young people from using them for evil.

The red aura of the Xiang family makes outsiders doubt their motives for moving to Taiwan.

According to Taiwan’s Free Times, Taiwan’s state security unit questioned Xiang Huaqiang’s pro-China political stance and his family members’ friendship with the Chinese Communist Party, why would a Hong Kong tycoon who lives well in Hong Kong migrate to Taiwan? The state security sources said that they could not rule out the possibility of “Chinese Communist missionary immigration”.

The Free Times quoted Lai Chung-keung, convener of the Economic Democracy Consortium think tank, as saying that the Taiwan government should be cautious in dealing with Hong Kong people’s dependent immigrants, and must consider it from the perspective of protecting Taiwan’s democratic institutions. Lai also said that Xiang Huaqiang is very influential in the film and television industry, if he comes to Taiwan to develop, he will also bring the Chinese political censorship set, I am afraid that it will cause Taiwan’s artists to “deteriorate in a wholesale manner, which is worrying.”

Justine, secretary-general of the Hong Kong Frontier City Youth in Taiwan, called on the Taiwanese government to protect Taiwan and Hong Kong people in Taiwan by refusing to allow Hong Kong people who support the Chinese Communist Party to come to Taiwan, especially those who hold positions in the Chinese Communist Party, government and military institutions.

The Land Commission official Qiu Chui-cheng told a press conference Thursday afternoon that Xiang Huaqiang and his son applied for entry in the name of business compliance in early September this year and could stay in Taiwan for three months, after which they could be extended for another three months if needed. At present, their application has been sent to the Taiwan Immigration Department for processing. Qiu Chuizheng said that the competent authorities will be in accordance with the Hong Kong and Macao residents to settle in Taiwan, such as the relevant provisions of the permit to review.
