health Canada announced today that it has approved U.S. company Modena Biotechnology’s 2019 coronavirus disease vaccine.
Reuters reports that Canada earlier this month also approved the use of a vaccine developed by U.S.-based Pfizer and German partner BioNTech. Authorities have already begun vaccinating health care workers and the elderly.
The U.S. also approved the Moderna vaccine on the 18th. The Moderna vaccine needs to be stored and delivered at refrigerated temperatures, but not at ultra-low temperatures like the Pfizer vaccine.
Health Canada said in a statement, “After a thorough and independent review of the evidence, we have confirmed that the Moderna vaccine meets the Department’s strict safety, efficacy and quality requirements.”
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on 15 May that Canada has signed a contract to obtain up to 168,000 doses of Modena vaccine by the end of the year.
Canada is now facing the second wave of the outbreak. Health care workers in some areas say the health care system is under pressure and the situation is urgent.
A total of 14,425 people have died and 521,509 cases have been confirmed in Canada.
