One month after its release, how is the common software experience of Apple M1 chip Mac?

Yesterday, Microsoft, known as “Apple’s good developer”, pushed out a new version of its Microsoft 365. The most important change in this update is that it supports Apple’s M1 chip, making this set of office essential software (office series), which is known to all Chinese users, support new computers.

After the update, the core office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote, now run more smoothly on M1 Macs. Microsoft uses Universal, or universal programs, so these software will also continue to run properly on Macs with Intel chips.

Microsoft office applications become Universal

So, in addition to Microsoft office, which software we use every day has been adapted to the M1 chip and what is the experience of using it? Simple classification by the type of our daily use.

I. Social communication class

Social applications have long been an integral part of our daily life, and qq and WeChat are among the representatives. On the M1 chip MacBook Pro, both WeChat and QQ run smoothly and are used without any hindrance on a daily basis.

QQ is already a universal application, but WeChat is not yet.

QQ is a universal App, meaning it’s optimized for the M1 chip and natively supports the M1 chip. WeChat is still an Intel app, translated through Rosetta 2. Although the M1-chip MacBook Pro has no problem running WeChat, it sometimes lags when opening larger images or shared posts from others.

The Weibo App was not originally a Mac App, but the M1 chip is special enough to allow apps on iOS and iPadOS to run on the Mac.

This app runs smoothly on the M1 chip MacBook Pro, so you can tweet on a daily basis with no problem. The window size can be dragged and dropped, but the UI may look unnatural when it is infinitely long.

Daily Office

Many users buy Macs for productivity and office work, so the smooth operation of productivity tools largely determines the success of the M1 chip Mac. As digital editors, our common office software includes Microsoft office or Wps, Photoshop, Final Cut Pro and so on.

As we mentioned at the beginning of the article, Microsoft office is already running smoothly on the M1 chip MacBook Pro, and they have all been upgraded from Intel applications to universal applications.

Photoshop beta version already supports M1 chip

Photoshop is an essential tool for design partners. photoshop beta is now optimized for the M1 chip, while other versions are still Intel applications.

Apple’s own Final Cut Pro editing tool needs no introduction, using the process, everything is very smooth and natural.

We also put browsers in this category, usually the most commonly used include Chrome, Firefox and Edge.

Firefox is also already a universal application and runs well on M1 chip Macs. Microsoft’s Edge browser is still an Intel application, so I use it as a backup browser on a daily basis and don’t open too many tabs. So far, it’s running smoothly and I haven’t found any serious problems.

Three, video entertainment category

I use Akiyon and Tencent Video for video applications. Akiyon is a universal application and Tencent Video is an Intel application. Like most Intel applications, some of the functions of Tencent Video will lag for the first time, which should be the translation work in the background, and then it can be used normally.

Akiyon runs perfectly fine.

NetEase Cloud Music and QQ Music are still Intel applications, and there is nothing wrong with the daily experience of both apps. The video player I chose is IINA, which is known as the most popular video player for “macOS” and is also currently an Intel app and works fine.

M1 chip for Mac has been a big success

Apple’s Arm architecture computer chip became the year-end black technology products, in addition to the leading 5-nanometer process, it also became Apple’s “hard and soft” concept of reinterpretation – in fact, other manufacturers have long made Arm chip computers, but the recognition is very low, mainly because there is little software.

When Apple prepared this chip, it thought of a solution to this problem. In addition to its ecological appeal to let developers update the adapted version, it also prepared Rosetta, as an App translator, which can translate the software that is temporarily not adapted to M1 into a runnable version, basically ensuring the experience of most users, and this translation process is senseless, only for the first start-up time will be longer than ten seconds.

For everyday use, the M1-chip MacBook Pro has no problems at all and can even do things that Intel-chip Macs can’t (run iOS and iPadOS apps).

When we got it, our expectations weren’t that high – it was a success when it was ready for everyday use. But now it seems that Apple’s M1-chip MacBook Pro has completely exceeded expectations. I’m happily using it myself today, and while I still occasionally encounter compatibility issues, they’re minor and don’t affect the big picture.

This is completely different from the previous experience with Microsoft’s ARM chip products, and I even think that if we give Apple and developers some more time to improve the ecology of the M1 chip, it may really replace Intel completely and bring new opportunities to the PC industry.
