The Russian media reported that Alexander Sasha Kagansky, a 45-year-old Russian scientist working on the development of a new pneumonia vaccine, fell to his death in his 14th floor apartment in St. Petersburg recently. Authorities have investigated the direction of the murder and have detained a 45-year-old male suspect.
Kagansky’s body was found by a neighbor while he was wearing only his underwear. Russian police found stab wounds on the body and believe he had an argument with someone before he fell, and his death may be a homicide. Dr. Kagansky, who was known for his work in cancer research, was also an assistant professor, according to the report. He had close ties to the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, England, where he worked for 13 years until 2017. He most recently served as director of the Center for Genomic and Regenerative Medicine at the Russian Far Eastern Federal University and continues his collaboration with the university in Scotland.
Russian media said Dr. Kagansky was previously working on a vaccine against the coronavirus. He also recently received a grant from the Russian government to research new ways to diagnose and treat malignant brain tumors and has advocated research into the use of herbs and mushrooms to treat cancer. British media noted that Kagansky was the first Russian delegate to the European Youth Parliament after the collapse of the former Soviet Union in 1991, and he was a member of the Scottish Academy of Youth Sciences during his lifetime.
