New Zealand’s Prime Minister Ardern announced that because the New Crown pneumonia vaccine ordered too much, enough for the country’s 5 million people to administer three times, decided to give the excess vaccine to neighboring countries.
Ardern announced on the 17th that in addition to the 750,000 doses of Pfizer vaccine and the 4 million doses of Janssen vaccine from the Joulsen Group, 18.3 million doses of Oxford vaccine and Novavax vaccine from the U.S. biotech company have been acquired. Both Oxford and Novavax vaccines require two doses, which means 9 million people can be vaccinated.
In total, New Zealand’s vaccine procurement volume is nearly three times the total population of 5 million. Alden said, “We have contracted with four suppliers and bought four different technologies of vaccines, which is more than enough to supply the whole population and our Pacific neighbors.”
Government officials announced that the countries where New Zealand will give away vaccines include Tokelau, Cook Islands, Niue, Samoa, Tonga, and Tuvalu.
