Britain’s two largest supermarkets warned Monday that they will experience shortages of goods in the coming days if the country’s transport links with mainland Europe are not restored quickly.
In an effort to curb the spread of a new, faster-spreading strain of the Chinese Communist Party virus, several European countries have issued travel bans against Britain, disrupting shipments of goods from France to the United Kingdom.
The French government closed its borders to arrivals from Britain for 48 hours, meaning no trucks could leave the British port of Dover, the main gateway to the continent.
British supermarket giants Tesco (Tesco) and Sainsbury’s both said that food supplies would be affected if the disruption continued.
“If the situation doesn’t change, we will start to see shortages of lettuce, some salad leaves, cauliflower, broccoli and citrus fruit in the coming days,” Sainsbury’s supermarkets said.
Tesco also highlighted a shortage of the aforementioned items, except for broccoli.
According to the BBC, Britain and France could reach an agreement on reopening the border by noon on Tuesday.
