Guangzhou, Dongguan, Shenzhen, Foshan and some areas of Zhuhai suffered a power outage for about an hour at 00:00 am this Monday. The sudden power outage caused the streets of Guangzhou’s Baiyun district to go dark, with no water or internet access. As the official did not warn in time, people once thought that disaster was coming, and then the official response said it was a power grid failure.
Following the power restrictions in Zhejiang, Hunan and Jiangxi, people are very sensitive to the power outage, and they are worried that the power outage will make it impossible to start heating equipment and put into production. According to a number of media reports in Hong Kong on Monday, the day, China’s power restrictions extended to Guangzhou, Dongguan, Shenzhen, Zhongshan, Foshan, Huizhou, Zhuhai and other cities in Guangdong Province, even the street lights power was interrupted, some netizens uploaded photos of blacked-out streets to social media platforms; due to the loss of power to the pump, water was cut off in many places. Some netizens said that the water supply was also cut off at exactly 00:00 am. A Guangzhou citizen told The Apple that she called the service hotline of the power supply bureau late at night to inquire and got a reply from China Southern Power Grid that “the power grid was down” and the area around Guangyuan West Road in Yuexiu District, Huangsha Avenue, Dongfeng West Road and Huanshi West Road in Liwan District were affected.
Ms. Zeng, a resident of Baiyun District, Guangzhou, said in an interview with Radio Free Asia on the same day that local power outages have occurred several times recently for unknown reasons: “A situation that has not occurred in the last ten years or so has suddenly appeared. The specific reason is said to be because coal is too tight and there is not enough coal supply. Some people also say that it is because there is not enough power generation, so now in addition to the impact of private electricity, production of electricity now also have difficulties.”

Last week, there were reports of brief power outages in Guangdong. Wang Aizhong, a resident of Guangzhou’s Tianhe District, told the station that he was not affected due to the short duration of the outage: “I live in Guangzhou’s Tianhe District, and for the past two days, there were no power outages on my side. Two days ago, on microblogging, there was an outflow of notices that there were some areas in Guangdong with power outages. Whether this is a normal maintenance outage or a power supply shortage that caused some districts in Guangzhou to lose power is not very clear.”
A Zhongshan restaurant waiter surnamed Zhu said to the station, “Yesterday, the day before yesterday, I saw a lawyer in the circle of friends posted that the Shenzhen side of the blackout, as for Zhongshan or Foshan side of the blackout, the details are not clear to me.”
Guangdong Power Supply Bureau responded on Monday, December 21, around 00:00 am, because of equipment failure, affecting some users in Guangzhou Sanyuanli, Luochongwei area with electricity. After more than an hour of repair, the Guangzhou Power Supply Bureau has restored power supply. The Guangdong power grid also dispelled rumors that the current operation of the Guangdong power grid is stable, the power supply is stable, please rest assured.
The power outage is said to be an “interruption of load”.
From tainted milk powder to New Crown pneumonia, the authorities have always been reluctant to disclose information about major incidents in China, including the initial outbreak of pneumonia in Wuhan, which caused tens of millions of infections worldwide. Last week, the government’s Development and Reform Commission in Zhejiang and Hunan issued a notice to restrict electricity consumption by residents and small businesses, but the authorities continued to cover up the blackouts, describing them as “load interruptions” and “orderly use of electricity.
Wang Liang, a retired professor from Jiangxi University, told the station, “We have blocked all news of the shortage of media and electricity from our side, saying that it is basically controllable, basically stable, and basically sufficient for power generation, a few ‘basic’, and we are not allowed to forward the content of the so-called civil power shortage on cell phone WeChat.”
The State Grid of China has announced earlier that due to the record high electricity load in the mainland, many provinces across the country have successively limited electricity, and the State Grid Hunan Electricity has to enter a full “war time state”.
