New crown epidemic rises, South Korea bans parties for more than 5 people in metropolitan area

According to “Yonhap News Agency”, South Korea’s recent new crown epidemic continues to worsen, and the government has introduced a ban on gatherings of five or more people in the metropolitan area for the upcoming year-end party and event season, hoping to stop the epidemic from continuing to spread.

The epidemic prevention measure to restrict the freedom of assembly is expected to be implemented from 00:00 a.m. on Tuesday (Dec. 22) until Jan. 3 next year, covering Seoul, Gyeonggi-do and Incheon cities.

The report added that the ban is stricter than the highest level of epidemic response, level 3, which bans parties of 10 people and more, while the Seoul metropolitan area is currently at level 2.5, which bans parties of 50 people and more.

As of 00:00 a.m. Monday, there were 926 new confirmed cases and 24 more deaths in South Korea, bringing the cumulative number of deaths to 698. Of the 892 cases that belong to the community, 649 cases are from the metropolitan area.
