Apple’s factory, the Taiwanese-owned PEGATRON Shanghai Changshuo factory yesterday erupted in a labor dispute with thousands of temporary workers protesting. The webcam showed many police officers arriving to maintain security, and some were beaten on the ground. In response to the incident, PEGATRON has announced that it will re-consult employees on their wishes.
Both Shanghai-based Chanceo Electronics Technology and Kunshan, Jiangsu-based Worldshock Electronics are part of PEGATRON. The dispute started when Chanceo wanted to transfer a group of temporary workers to work at Worldsteel, citing the need for Worldsteel’s production line planning. Some netizens responded that Chanceo said it was a voluntary choice for employees, but it was actually mandatory, and said that if they didn’t go, they could get a separation slip and leave.
Some investigators tweeted that these temporary workers and Chang Shuo originally signed a contract to do 60 days (excluding holidays), the company will give job search subsidies (return fees). But with the transfer happening, the employees are worried that the job search allowance will be gone.
Commonly known as “rebate” job search subsidy, is the factory because of recruitment difficulties, will give the agency a certain recruitment costs and goals, the agency in order to achieve performance, then take out part of the cost and job seekers share. According to the agreement published by the netizen, someone and the agency agreed to “clock in 55 days on the job for 90 days” at Chang Shuo, and the rebate amounted to RMB 11,000 (about NTD 47,000).
After the outbreak of thousands of people’s wage claims at Chanso, most of the videos and discussions were taken down on the internet in mainland China, but many protest videos and documents could be seen on the overseas social media platform Twitter.
The company sent staff to explain, but could not stop the protest anger, a large number of police officers then came to maintain order, in the process had clashed with the gathered people, someone was beaten to the ground.
The announcement of support and job-seeking allowance issued by Chanso on the 19th showed that for dispatched employees, due to the strategic adjustment of the group’s production capacity, the 21st will re-investigate the willingness of employees to go to work at Chanso in Kunshan, and the number of days during the support period will be combined with the number of days working at Chanso, without affecting the job-seeking allowance. In addition, the announcement said that the company sincerely hopes that employees will stay in their jobs and will work hard to improve production capacity.
