Japan’s Tokyo metropolis today (20) added 556 cases of Wuhan pneumonia (new coronavirus disease, COVID-19) confirmed cases, the highest number of new cases on Sunday, at the same time, Tokyo’s single month confirmed cases also exceeded 10,000 cases for the first time.
The epidemic continues to heat up in Tokyo, where 736 cases were confirmed on Saturday, the second highest single day, and 556 new cases were added on Sunday, with more than 100 cases among young people in their 20s and 30s, 13 cases under 10 and 6 cases over 90.
Tokyo has had more than 500 confirmed cases for five consecutive days, and today’s figure is the highest number of new cases on a Sunday since the outbreak began, compared to 480 cases on a single day last Sunday. In addition, as of today, the number of confirmed cases in Tokyo has reached 10,507, the first time in a single month the number of confirmed cases exceeded 10,000.
Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike said, “The number of confirmed cases today is slightly higher than Sunday, and the number of seriously ill patients has increased. Considering that Sunday’s notification was not sufficient, I think it is necessary to further upgrade (epidemic prevention measures) in the future.”
Tokyo set a new high of 822 confirmed cases last Thursday, raising the medical alert level to the most serious “medical system urgency” for the first time. Koike has previously urged people to take strict precautions during the year-end and New Year holidays.
The total number of confirmed cases in Tokyo is now 51,446, and the number of seriously ill patients has increased by 4 to 66.
