U.S. Space Force anniversary Pence announces new name “Guardians”

The U.S. Space Force celebrated its one-year anniversary on Dec. 18 with Vice President Mike Pence, who announced the naming of the Space Force as “Guardians.

Pence said, “I am honored to announce on behalf of President Trump that henceforth, the personnel of the U.S. Space Force will be known as Guardians.” He added that the space guardians will join the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines in defending the United States.

The U.S. Space Force later tweeted about the origin of the name “Guardians,” the statement read: “Naming the unit is a moment to highlight the enormous responsibility of the force, and the name ‘Guardians’ has a long history in U.S. space operations The name ‘Guardian’ has a long history in U.S. space operations, dating back to the original motto of the U.S. Air Force Space Command (AFSPC) in 1983, ‘Guardians of the High Frontier.'”

The U.S. Space Force also tweeted that the “Guardian” designation also connects the Space Force to its proud heritage and culture as they provide protection to the people of the United States and America’s allies every day.

The three primary goals of the U.S. Space Force include: ensuring U.S. dominance in space; providing space support for all joint U.S. and allied military operations and ensuring space stability; and deterring aggression and upholding international space agreements through a sustained space presence. The force is responsible for a range of U.S. space-based military activities (space-based), with responsibilities that include providing technical support for military, civilian and commercial satellite communications, space transportation; and operations in space support, command and control of nuclear blast detection and missile warning, and missile defense systems.

President Trump signed the $738 billion defense bill in 2019, which authorizes the Space Force and provides the first paid leave for federal employees. President Trump called the bill the largest investment the U.S. government has ever made in the military. The bill also aims to address a range of potential threats posed by the Chinese Communist Party to the United States.

Earlier in July, the Space Force unveiled its official motto: “Always Above” and the force’s logo. The statement reads, “This Delta logo was originally activated in 1961 to honor the heritage of the U.S. Air Force and Space Command; the star in the center of the logo represents the North Star, symbolizing that the U.S. Space Force is the ‘leading light’ for human space development.”
