The 12 Hong Kong people were intercepted by the Guangdong Marine Police while fleeing to Taiwan and have been detained in Shenzhen for 119 days. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo tweeted on Friday that the 12 Hong Kong people involved should be released immediately, saying that their so-called “crime” was just “trying to escape tyranny”.
Pompeo said, “The 12 Hong Kong people should be released immediately. Their so-called ‘crime’ is fleeing tyranny. Today’s Communist China is turning Hong Kong into the East Berlin of yesteryear, actively preventing its own people from seeking freedom elsewhere.”
Pompeo has spoken out on behalf of the 12 Hong Kong people several times since September this year, for example, expressing concern that the 12 Hong Kong people have not been able to meet with the lawyers appointed by their families, and has said that the 12 Hong Kong people have not committed a crime, arguing that they simply believe they enjoy freedom and power and have not committed a crime.
A spokesman for the HKSAR government later responded that it firmly opposed the remarks made by some U.S. officials regarding the 12 fugitives, and expressed strong dissatisfaction with these statements that ignore the facts and confuse right and wrong.
