U.S. Defense Department shuts down briefings in surprise Biden team warns of national security consequences

President-elect Joe Biden’s transition team continued to warn of national security risks after saying earlier that the Pentagon had abruptly suspended briefings to the transition team.

Yohannes Abraham, executive director of Biden’s transition team, said he was “quite concerned to learn this week of the abrupt break in what had been limited cooperation.

President Trump, who will leave office on Jan. 20, has yet to acknowledge his defeat, and until recently did not allow government agencies to work with Biden’s team in the usual way.

Acting Defense Secretary Chris Miller, a Trump appointee, said in a statement today that the two sides “mutually agreed to suspend” briefings of military officials during the holiday period.

But Abraham rebutted Miller’s claim, telling the media that “the two sides did not mutually agree to a break during the furlough” and warning that failure to work together could affect more than just Biden’s inauguration next January.

Abraham also said the Biden team “hopes and expects” the Defense Department to resume briefings “immediately.

Traditionally, incoming and outgoing U.S. government teams plan carefully for the transition of power, but this year has not been as smooth as in previous years, and the Pentagon’s suspension of briefings is just the latest example. In addition, the U.S. government agencies have also been found to have been hit by a massive cyber attack, suspected to be the work of the Russian government behind it.

Abraham said that the situation has been “urgent”.

Trump has not yet issued a direct statement on the hacking, he also did not say anything about the political and private network security company executives alleged that Russia is the culprit of the cyber attack.

The company said that the attack was “a big deal” and that the Biden administration would make the attackers pay a big price.
