Trump Officially Appoints “1776” Patriotic Education Advisory Committee

On Friday (Dec. 18), President Trump officially appointed 18 members of the President’s 1776 Advisory Council for a two-year term. The body is focused on opposing the leftist New York Times’ 1619 education curriculum project and aims to foster an understanding of the history of the founding of the United States in 1776 among American students.

The committee’s executive director will be Matthew Spalding, vice president and director of educational programs at Hillsdale College. In a statement, Spalding said the 1776 Commission will operate around “the core principles of America’s founding and how to protect those principles by promoting patriotic education” and “accessing our shared values by revisiting our nation’s history. “

In early November, Trump issued an executive order establishing the President’s 1776 Advisory Council to promote understanding of America’s founding ideals, history and values among American students.

The bill is said to counter the “Project 1619,” an education program developed by a New York Times reporter. “The 1619 Project begins with the first arrival of more than 20 black slaves on the American continent in 1619 and talks about the alleged bloody origins of slavery in the United States, leading to an overall distortion of American history. The project describes the year the first black slaves arrived on the American continent as “the birth of the American nation.”

Since the late 1980s, educational curricula in the United States have tilted toward leftist thinking, with anti-traditional educational themes appearing in textbooks while true American history is casually distorted. Guided by this educational philosophy, national surveys show that less than one in eight eighth graders are now familiar with real American history.

In this context, the Trump administration established the President’s 1776 Advisory Council, which aims to improve young students’ understanding of America’s history and founding principles, organize educational activities at federal sites, including national parks and monuments, that help promote a sense of national honor, and popularize the values of true American heritage. The executive order also establishes the President’s 1776 Award to recognize students’ understanding of America’s founding values.

In addition to establishing the new commission, Trump ordered the Commonwealth to prioritize traditional patriotic education issues when providing resources to educational institutions across the United States and to take steps to require U.S. educational institutions that receive federal funding to observe and celebrate Constitution Day.
