Chinese Taijiquan successfully inscribed as a World Heritage Site

According to a report in the China Times today, China’s Taijiquan and the Sino-Malaysian joint application for the inscription of the King Boat were successful. The report said that on the evening of December 17, Beijing time, China’s “Taijiquan” project, which was nominated by China alone, was inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity after being evaluated and approved by the 15th ordinary session of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. In addition, the project of “Sending the King’s Boat – Rituals and Related Practices Concerning the Sustainable Connection between People and the Sea”, which was jointly nominated by China and Malaysia, was also approved at the same time. China now has 42 intangible cultural heritage items on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List, the highest in the world.

According to the report, which was cited by China’s CCTV news, the current ordinary session of the Committee will be held online from December 14 to 19, 2020, and will evaluate 50 intangible cultural heritage items nominated by 57 countries. The “Taijiquan” project, which has been declared by China alone for 12 years, was finally inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by the Committee on the 17th. According to CCTV, Taijiquan has been handed down from generation to generation since its formation in the mid-17th century, and has been practiced in various parts of the world and has been widely disseminated and passed down overseas. There is no restriction on the gender, age, physique, occupation and nationality of the practitioners. By practicing Taijiquan, people can cultivate their bodies and strengthen them, while passing on the cultural genes of the Chinese nation. According to the Chinese Taijiquan website, it has been 12 years since 2008 since the inscription of Taijiquan. According to the report, this year, in order to solidly and effectively promote Taijiquan’s inscription work, the Taijiquan Inheritance Development Conference of the Global Taiji People’s Focus on Chenjiagou Joy Walk, which was directed by the Department of Non-Foreign Heritage of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of China and hosted by the Department of Culture and Tourism of Henan Province and the municipal government of Jiaozuo City, was held in Chenjiagou, Jiaozuo City.
