In the second half of 2017, I read a paper titled “Practice and Thinking on The Prediction of Recidivism Possibility of Released Prisoners”. The recidivism rate of released prisoners is always high, so it is not easy for them to return to normal life by relying on “self-reconciliation” or “conscience appeal”. I came up with the idea of visiting some of my fellow inmates to learn about their life outside prison and the impact of their prison experience. Because I didn’t have the professional interview skills, most of the interviews were carried away by the other side in a “shoot the breeze” way. Finally, I restored the story of Tang Dongdong in a pile of fragmentary materials. I think even my own record is not enough to reflect the general situation of the population of ex-convicts. It is just the result of my conscious selection. To be honest, this is also a way for me to make up for my utilitarian writing.

After commutation, Tang dongdong was released one year and six months early. When tang Dongdong was released from prison for the first time, he was already 32 years old. Considering that he was only 23 years old when he was released from prison, not only the number of his age was reversed, but also the changes of the outside world were earthshaking for him.
He doesn’t want to go home. That day, he and a fellow inmate, whom he had only met at the prison gate on the same day, stayed up late at night near the prison and stole a spare transformer. Little did they know that the cameras attached to the poles would record their path in a way that the world had not yet taught them.
Four days later, when they planned to deliver the transformer to a buyer for 3,000 yuan, Tang was arrested again on suspicion of theft.
Because he is a recidivism, Tang was given a heavy sentence of eight years (which was later reduced by another year and three months). Soon, the name and appearance of the inmate he had been working with were almost impossible to recall accurately. “It was like a dream,” he said. “It was like waking up in prison, like he had never been released.”
Two prison experiences in a row, left the impression of Tang Dongdong, like an absurd long dream.

“You won’t be able to live without a hundred thousand dollars for me!”

On the day of signing the agreement, Tang Dongdong looked back and saw his brother and mother hunched over in the corner crying, which was not enough to move him. It was the way his sister-in-law, with a cut lip, shivered in her arms around his 12-year-old nephew and tormented him in her mind for several nights afterwards.

The day before the homestead deal, Tang’s mother and sister-in-law went back to the house to pick up the things they had forgotten to take away. Standing in front of the house, which is about to be renamed, his mother tells Tang a story that surprises him:

On April 6, 2015, Tang Handed himself in at the nearest police station, confessing that he had drunk and run away after hitting others. Before deciding to surrender, he did not tell Ma Qin — he was afraid that any advice or intervention from her would shake his resolve.
The same day, Tang Dongdong in the police station until the evening, the police removed his handcuffs. He was told to go home and wait for the result of drinking and driving without a license, while the case of the traffic accident turned into a fraud case and the suspect, Ma Qin, and her ex-husband, Gao Yuming, were brought back to the interrogation room for investigation.

In August 2015, Ma Qin repaid tang Dongdong’s loan secured by a car, tang Dongdong issued a letter of understanding for the criminal case victim. Ma Qin and her ex-husband were given a lighter sentence for the crime of fraud, and Gao Yuming was sentenced to three years in prison. Ma was sentenced to two years in prison with a three-year reprieve.
Afterword.
Was he free of fate, or had it never made him a villain at all? This is the whole incident after the end, until today, Tang Dongdong has always remained a question.
