The people of Texas recently intended to launch a referendum to decide whether to secede from the U.S. federal government and reach the goal of independent statehood. The referendum has been endorsed by a state lawmaker, Rep. Kyle Biedermann, R-Fredericksburg, Texas, who said he plans to introduce a bill calling for a statewide referendum on whether to secede.
The federal government is out of control, and it doesn’t represent the values of Texans,” Biedermann said in a statement. That’s why I’m committed to bringing to the Legislature this session to allow a referendum that would allow Texans to vote for Texas to secede from the federal government as an independent nation,” he said.
Biederman’s referendum proposal is also supported by the Texas Nationalist Movement, a group led by Daniel Miller, who has been advocating for 20 years that Texas should secede from the United States and become an independent nation, according to foreign media reports.
Miller states, “Texans are tired of living under 180,000 pages of federal laws, rules and regulations administered by 440 separate agencies and 2.5 million unelected officials. If all the federal laws, rules and regulations were printed and stacked up, they would be taller than the San Jacinto Monument. (The San Jacinto Monument is 173.7 meters tall and is located in Harris County, Texas, USA, to commemorate the decisive battle for Texas independence.)
In fact, Texas had become an independent nation in 1836 and remained so until 1845, when it joined the U.S. federal government as one of the states. Thus, the question of Texas’ independence is now being raised again.
