In response to a recent joke by Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian, who said on Dec. 9 that individual politicians who say China does not respect minority languages should look at the Chinese yuan, which has five languages on it, and that there are other languages in the United States besides English, the U.S. State Department forwarded a video of the Chinese Communist Party punishing minority students in Xinjiang schools for speaking their native languages. The expression quickly spread in Chinese circles at home and abroad, triggering a large number of netizens to troll. On December 9, at a regular press conference of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, a reporter asked what China had to say about the U.S. State Department’s official Twitter feed that retweeted a video it produced about the Communist Party’s erasure of minority languages, cultures and religions in Xinjiang schools.
In response, Zhao Lijian claimed that the content of the video posted by the U.S. was factually incorrect, claiming that “Xinjiang guarantees the right of all ethnic groups to use and develop their own languages and scripts.”
Zhao Lijian went on to complain that individual American politicians always smear China for not respecting minority languages and scripts, “I suggest they take a look at the Chinese yuan, which has five scripts printed on it: Chinese, Tibetan, Uyghur, Mongolian and Zhuang. In contrast, in the United States, are there any other languages on the dollar bill besides English?”
The Chinese Foreign Ministry’s sophistry is evident in its equation of the words printed on the yuan with respect for language. Not long after Zhao Lijian’s response was issued, it was reposted in a large number of screenshots, sparking heated debate among netizens. Some said, “What else can you do but self-indulge? If you print 500 kinds of words, the earth will belong to the Chinese Communist Party, right?” The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is really not very smart, and it is a disgrace to the international community.

The Chinese Communist Party has built a large number of concentration camps in Xinjiang in recent years, imprisoning millions of ethnic minorities and forcing them to renounce their faith. On December 2 of this year, the German Foreign Ministry released its biennial Human Rights Report 2020 (Menschenrechtsbericht 2020). The report notes that the human rights situation in Xinjiang and Tibet is dire, ranging from persecution, surveillance and mass detentions. The authorities have also set up “re-education camps” in Xinjiang, which have led to a continuing deterioration of human rights in Xinjiang, as well as slave labor and forced birth control. These measures are aimed at “Sinicizing” the Uighur minority, meaning that ethnic groups such as the Uighurs are forced to conform to “Chinese Communist” cultural concepts and guidance.
Reports of human rights violations in Xinjiang are well documented, and Human Rights Watch and others accuse the Communist Party of building a high-tech surveillance state under the guise of fighting terrorism. Uyghurs in exile denounced the “cultural genocide” and called for an international investigation.
The U.S. State Department’s official Twitter account posted a video on Dec. 8 stating that “in schools in the Xinjiang region, the Chinese Communist Party punishes Uighur students and other members of the Muslim minority for speaking their native language and prohibits prayer and any religious dress on campus. The video was posted and retweeted by many human rights followers, with tweeters leaving additional evidence in the comments section.
