The police confirmed that the National Security Division, after further investigation, today charged Next Media Chairman Lai Chi-ying with one count of “colluding with a foreign state or foreign forces to endanger national security” under the National Security Law. The case will be arraigned in the West Kowloon Magistrates’ Court tomorrow morning (12). Now News quoted sources as saying that the charge was related to Lai’s call for foreign sanctions against Hong Kong during an interview.
The 73-year-old Lai Chi-ying and two senior executives of Next Media Group were arraigned on a charge of fraud earlier this month, with Lai’s application for bail rejected and he is currently on remand. Lai was scheduled to apply for bail at the High Court next Tuesday (15), which will be handled by High Court Judge Lee Yun-teng, a judge appointed under the National Security Law.
Lai Chi-ying next Tuesday to the High Court to apply for bail
A number of Next Media executives, including Lai Chi-ying, were arrested by police in August on suspicion of violating the National Security Law and conspiracy to defraud. Lai Chi-ying, along with Next Media Group President and Chief Financial Officer Chow Tat-kuen and Chief Executive Officer Wong Wai-keung, were charged earlier this month with one count of fraud for allegedly breaching the terms of the lease of the Tseung Kwan O Industrial Estate. National Security Law Designated Judge So Wai Tak denied bail to Lai Chi Ying, while Chow Tat Kuen and Wong Wai Keung were released on bail.
