Hyundai to acquire Boston Dynamics for approximately $921 million

According to Korea Economic Daily, Hyundai Motor recently announced that it will acquire U.S. robotics company Boston Dynamics from SoftBank Group for about $921 million, and it is reported that the acquisition proposal will be finalized on December 10.

The Hyundai Group believes that robotics will serve as a new growth engine for the future, along with electric vehicles.

As soon as the news was released, Hyundai and SoftBank’s share prices have risen.

Partnerships, deals, M&A, acquisitions

Information shows that robotics research and manufacturing company Boston Dynamics was founded in 1992 and acquired by Google’s parent company Alphabet in 2013, and Alphabet sold Boston Dynamics to SoftBank in 2017. Its robots include: quadruped robot SPOT, foot + wheeled robot HANDLE, bipedal robot ATLAS and so on.

In June, Boston Dynamics announced it would officially put its quadruped robot Spot on sale for $74,500, which U.S. companies can purchase through the company’s website. Boston Dynamics says it sells its robots primarily to industrial or commercial companies that have work scenarios but don’t want people to arrive for long periods of time. spot can be used for measurement and data collection, broadcast alerts to keep social distance, remote classification of suspected patients, patrols and more.

As of October of this year, Boston Dynamics released data saying it had received 260 orders for the Spot robot.
