Historic breakthrough Trump brokers Israel-Morocco diplomatic ties

In another major breakthrough in the Middle East peace process promoted by the Trump administration, Israel and Morocco reached an agreement to establish full diplomatic relations on Thursday (Dec. 10).

U.S. President Donald Trump was the first to announce the news on Twitter, declaring that “another historic breakthrough has been made! Two great friends, Israel and the Kingdom of Morocco, have agreed to establish full diplomatic relations in a huge breakthrough for peace in the Middle East.”

As part of the historic agreement, President Trump signed a proclamation that day declaring U.S. recognition of Morocco’s sovereign status in Western Sahara. “Morocco recognized the United States back in 1777, so the United States should recognize their sovereignty over Western Sahara as well,” Trump wrote in a tweet. And “Morocco’s serious, credible and realistic proposal for autonomy is the only basis for a just and long-term solution that promotes lasting peace and prosperity.

The good news came on the first night of Hanukkah in Israel. During the lighting ceremony at the Western Wall plaza, Netanyahu once again expressed his gratitude to President Trump.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu: “I have always believed that this historic day would eventually come, always worked for it, and I want to start by thanking President Trump for his extraordinary efforts to expand peace and bring peace to the people of Israel and the Middle East.”

Netanyahu said Israel will quickly restore the liaison office with Morocco and establish full diplomatic relations as soon as possible with direct flights between the two countries.

This is the fourth Middle East peace deal brokered by the Trump administration since August of this year, after the UAE, Bahrain and Sudan have reached permanent peace agreements with Israel. These historic breakthroughs, previously considered unlikely, have made Trump the international leader who has made the greatest contribution to the Middle East peace process in recent times, and has been nominated for three Nobel Peace Prizes this year.
