The outbreak in Germany is severe, with the number of deaths from the disease topping 20,000, and Lothar Wieler, director of the Robert Koch Institute for Disease Control and Prevention, said there is a worrying shift in the trend of new confirmed cases.
“The increase in the number of confirmed coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is worrisome,” said Lothar Wieler, director of the Robert Koch Institute. He warned that after a few weeks of plateauing, “the infection process could flip again” and show exponential growth.
“Germany will have to take more restrictive measures to break this trend,” he said.
“Other measures should be considered. If (current measures) don’t work, then I don’t see any other possibilities.”
Germany ordered a new round of shutdowns in November, closing cultural and leisure facilities and banning indoor dining.
German health officials had credited those measures in mid-November with curbing the outbreak’s rapid growth.
But German Chancellor Angela Merkel also called for tighter restrictions as the number of infections rose again after the number of confirmed cases in a single day remained steady at about 20,000 for several weeks.
Germany reported today that 23,679 new cases have been confirmed in the past 24 hours, while the number of deaths from the disease in a single day reached 440.
Wille said it is worrying that the number of elderly and nursing home infections is now twice as high as in August.
