The U.S. Treasury Department recently sanctioned all 14 Chinese National People’s Congress vice chairmen over the disqualification of four pro-democracy lawmakers in Hong Kong. A spokesperson for the Standing Committee of the Chinese National People’s Congress later indicated that the relevant authorities would “impose reciprocal sanctions. The Chinese Foreign Ministry announced on Thursday (10) that it would cancel visa-free access to Hong Kong and Macau for U.S. diplomatic passport holders on temporary visits.
However, some analysts pointed out that the U.S. side sanctioned the top vice-president of the Chinese Communist Party, while the Chinese Communist Party only targeted the general diplomatic passport holders, questioning that the so-called “reciprocal sanctions” are only “loud thunder but little rain”.
