The Yomiuri Shimbun reported on Saturday that Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has entered Keio University Hospital in Tokyo’s Shinano-cho for the first time after 19 days, following his resignation on Aug. 24.
According to the Japanese prime minister’s secretary, the reason for Abe’s return to the hospital was to “treat an old illness.
Abe’s old illness is “ulcerative colitis,” which is being treated with an IV injection in addition to the medication he used in the past, and will require ongoing treatment.
Following Abe’s announcement of his resignation as prime minister, the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) is in the process of electing a new president, with current Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga as the most vocal candidate.
The LDP presidential election is scheduled for September 14, and Abe will hand over the baton after the new president is appointed.
