Chinese tax software suspected of remotely manipulating foreign companies

US cybersecurity firm Trustwave Holding warned in June that Intelligent Tax, a Chinese government-authorized tax software program, contained spyware that could be remotely manipulated by Chinese authorities if US companies in China were required by local banks to install it.

The FBI warned U.S. companies in China in July that Aisino, the company that supplied the software, and Golden Tax, a tax software program provided by Baiwang Cloud, were similarly suspect.

The U.S. cybersecurity firm Trustwave also found that the spy programs in the two tax software programs were the same, although the names were different; and the company that opened the Golden Tax software was actually a subsidiary of Aisino Corporation.

The report also noted that Aisino’s parent company is the China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation (CASIC), which is involved with the Chinese military and designs and manufactures a variety of weapons.

The United States and Germany have also cooperated on this matter. Germany’s Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution issued a similar warning to German companies in China in August.
