Huang Qi, founder of Chengdu’s Juneteenth.com, was sentenced to nearly four years in prison, but was allowed to meet with his mother for the first time on Thursday. Huang Qi’s mother, Pu Wenqing, said she found his hands swollen and red when she met with her son by video in prison, and when she asked him about them, she learned that he only eats two eggs a week. Huang Qi was clearly malnourished.
Huang Qi, a Chinese dissident, was arrested in November 2016 and sentenced to 12 years in prison for “intentionally revealing state secrets” and “illegally providing state secrets to foreign entities. Huang met his mother, Pu Wenqing, via video from Bazhong Prison in Sichuan province on Thursday. The mother and son had mixed feelings about the meeting, and spent most of the 30-minute meeting talking about Huang Qi’s health.
Wang Jing, a member of the “Huang Qi Family and Friends Group,” told Radio Free Asia about Pu Wenqing’s visit to Huang Qi. Pu Wenqing said he suffers from cataracts and his vision is blurred: “I only saw his hands and feet, and I stretched out my hands to see them. I asked him if his feet were swollen, and he said they were, but my ears couldn’t hear clearly, so he had to repeat himself. I told him that his swollen feet and swollen hands were probably low in protein and that he needed to make sure he got one egg a day. Before the words are finished, the time is up.”
Pu Wenqing, who is over 80 years old, said the meeting lasted only 30 minutes, and she felt the conversation ended quickly: “Only half an hour, I asked him to call home once a month, whether he can do so, do not yet know, do not yet know when the epidemic can be unsealed. It’s because the lawyers can’t see Huang Qi now. He said that because of the current national epidemic, he can’t let his lawyer see Huang Qi.”
Huang Qi’s family and friends group member Wang Jing told the station: “Grandma Pu said it was too hasty because they (the prison) only have half an hour to meet, she only asked about Huang Qi’s current condition and simple living situation. He said the medicine is good in prison, and it’s quite symptomatic.”
Two others in Huang Qi’s case were released on probation.
Huang Qi was arrested at the June 4 Tianwang studio in Chengdu. The verdict states that Huang Qi released a so-called secret document on the Internet, but Huang Qi’s defense attorney said that the so-called document was only a document from the community neighborhood committee, without a name, official seal, or signature. The document was provided by a local visitor, Chen Tianmao, who received the document from a local government official, which reads, “We will focus on cracking down on the June Fourth crackdown.
Huang Qi’s mother wanted to see her son, but she had waited for almost four years: “She has waited too long for this day. Now thank you for your support and concern.”
Yang Xiuqiong and Chen Tianmao were both involved in the Huang Qi case, the former having been sentenced to probation and released in 2018; only Huang Qi was heavily sentenced. In an interview with the station, Yang questioned the authorities’ targeting of Huang Qi. She said: “I should be the main offender, Huang Qi should be an accessory, not the main offender, we didn’t sentence, why sentenced Huang Qi. In addition, there is Chen Tianmao, this so-called secret document they obtained from Chen Tianmao, Chen Tianmao was not sentenced, why sentenced Huang Qi, the material was approved by Chen Tianmao (public), if guilty, Chen Tianmao should be the main offender. Why was Huang Qi sentenced so heavily.”
Attacked after Skynet exposes documents in 2016
We have reported that Huang Qi was arrested in 2016 in connection with an April 6, 2016, Tianwang report that “Sichuan Provincial Public Security Department has set up a plan to crack down on Tianwang Huang Qi. According to the article, in mid-March 2016, Mianyang officials revealed that the “June 4 Tianwang” was a foreign network, a reactionary network, dedicated to sending China’s scandals abroad to make foreigners laugh. Wang Dongming, the provincial party secretary, issued an order instructing the Mianyang Public Security Bureau to take care of Huang Qi and others. The next day, the June 4 website was again attacked by hackers.
The authorities questioned Huang Qi about this material from an official in a street office in Mianyang: “Huang Bin, who mainly leaked state secrets, is still working in a government job”.
On November 28, 2016, Huang Qi was taken away by the police in Chengdu’s “June 4, 2016” studio, and authorities pointed to the “June 4, 2016” publication of the Political and Legal Committee of the Youxian District Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) in Mianyang on the handling of the letter and petition requests of the petitioner Chen Tianmao and related information. The “Report on the Problem” is strictly confidential information. Last year, Huang Qi was sentenced to 12 years in prison and had his personal property confiscated for 20,000 RMB.
