U.S. Media: Mail to White House Contains Deadly Ricin

U.S. media are reporting today that U.S. authorities have intercepted a letter sent to the White House that contained a deadly ricin.

The New York Times and CNN, among other U.S. media outlets, reported that the letter, which was discovered earlier this week, did not reach the White House. The New Times reports that the letter is believed to have been sent from Canada.

The contents of the letter were repeatedly examined at one of the warehouses and confirmed to contain ricin, CNN reported.

The FBI’s Washington Bureau of Investigation said in a statement: “The FBI, US Secret Service, and US Postal Inspection Service partners are investigating a suspicious letter received at a U.S. government mail facility. At this time, there is no known threat to public safety.

Authorities contacted by AFP would not discuss further details.

After castor oil is extracted from castor beans, the residue extracts a deadly ricin. There is no antidote for this toxin, which can cause organ failure and death if swallowed, inhaled, or injected in small amounts.
