According to Tokyo sources, the second meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the United States, Japan, India and Australia (Quad) will be held in Tokyo in early October at the earliest, following coordination between the Japanese government and the countries concerned.
Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Shigeru, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Australian Foreign Minister Payne and Indian Foreign Minister Jason Suessen are expected to attend the meeting, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported Saturday. The foreign ministers of the four countries met for the first time last September on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.
At the same time, Japanese officials are coordinating a meeting between Prime Minister Kan and the three foreign ministers to take the opportunity to meet. If the talks take place, it will be Kan’s first direct meeting with a foreign dignitary as prime minister.
Japanese officials reported that the four foreign ministers are expected to use the meeting to reaffirm the importance of maintaining a free and open Indo-Pacific region and to exchange views on dealing with the neo-crowning pandemic and China-related issues.
