North Korea continues to violate international nuclear sanctions against it

The United Nations Security Council has imposed sanctions on North Korea for years, demanding that it halt all ballistic missile launches and nuclear tests. The latest report released by the Security Council on Monday shows that the DPRK is using a variety of methods to violate the sanctions by importing large quantities of oil and luxury cars and other products from various sources.

The Security Council adopted a new resolution imposing sanctions on the DPRK back in August 2017, demanding that the DPRK halt all ballistic missile launches and nuclear tests. The Security Council asked the international community to strengthen sanctions on the DPRK’s export of goods, restricting the export of raw materials such as coal and iron ore as well as seafood, and limiting investment and oil imports into Pyongyang.

U.N. experts note that the DPRK has held meetings with the United States and South Korea while continuing to develop its nuclear weapons.

The experts released their latest investigation on Monday, pointing to photos and data showing that the DPRK continues to build up its nuclear and missile development, and that the Pyongyang authorities are using different means to circumvent international sanctions, such as the use of tankers with foreign nationality to import large amounts of oil in excess of the sanctions limit.

The UN expert’s report does not name the countries that export to the DPRK, but it does emphasize that the DPRK also imports products such as luxury automobiles, suggesting that the DPRK continues to violate the UN Security Council’s sanctions resolutions.

North Korea’s allies, China and Russia, noted that the conclusions reached in the Security Council report were “assumptions and estimates.
