The results of a poll on the one-year extension of the Hong Kong Legislative Council were released, and 14 legislators from the Democratic Party and the Civic Party decided to accept the extension. In a letter to the President of the Legislative Council, the convenor of the Civic Party’s Democratic Party, Chan Suk-chong, said she would not renew her term as a legislator for personal reasons and quit the Civic Party at the same time. She said she is just an ordinary Hong Kong citizen, and it is her life’s honor to serve this family in Hong Kong.
Chen Shu-chang Tuesday afternoon in the Civic Party leader Yang Yueqiao, accompanied by Civic Party members Guo Ka-ki, Guo Rong-kang, Tan Wen-hao held a press conference to explain the details, she described the decision to leave is not easy, but considering health and family issues, decided to leave the political arena, I hope to spend more time with my mother in the future, speaking a few times choked and teary eyes.
I’ve never left politics, so I’ve never really taken a vacation, or I’ve never really left politics, but at this moment, whether it’s my health, or time with my family, I feel sorry for them, and I think it’s time to take a break.
For the reason why she chose to make the decision on the same day as the poll results were announced, Tanya Chen said that she hadn’t explained earlier because she didn’t want to influence the democrats’ “stay or go poll”. As the Civic Party based on the results of the opinion polls and decided to extend the term of office, I was unable to comply with the party’s decision, so I quit the Civic Party, I hope that the outside world do not make any speculation.
I think it is not easy to decide to extend the term of the democrats for one year, and face even more pressure and obstruction, she is sorry for her departure, and thanked the democrats for not treating her as a “deserter”, even though she left the political arena, she will continue to support the democrats, the Civic Party, and the development of democracy in Hong Kong.
But I believe that in addition to the parliamentary front, in fact, the support of the public is very important, I hope that we continue to care about what happens in the parliament, I believe that when my colleagues in the parliament need to help, I, as a citizen or other Hong Kong citizens, will be obliged, will continue to support them.
Looking back on her 15 years of political career, Tanya Chan said that some Civic Party members once expressed their opposition to the “co-location” of the Express Rail Link, but after retiring from the party, they changed their position and supported the “co-location”, which made her most sad, and also criticized the pro-establishment camp for escorting the government, while destroying the traditions of Hong Kong. She also said that since she became a legislator, she was deeply disappointed that she could not even promote a piece of legislation that is beneficial to all Hong Kong citizens and has little impact on them.
She said: “Frankly speaking, I think I have done very little in the past 15 years, and I keep asking myself if I could have done more. In the end, as a legislator, I have this position, there is something I have not done, is owed to the people of Hong Kong? Frankly speaking, I have a lot on my mind, the “tree law” is closely related to everyone’s life is a simple legislation, I can not implement, even the government is not willing to do, almost all of Hong Kong’s citizens are good things I can not do, I feel negative to many people.
She stressed that she would not run for the Legislative Council or do KOL, and would not be interviewed again. In the end, she expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to serve the people of Hong Kong in the past, describing it as her lifelong honor.
I don’t feel that I have to pay any price. Frankly speaking, I am just serving my family, and to have this opportunity to serve my family is a lifelong honor and I will not regret it.
Civic Party leader Yueqiao Yang also said at the meeting, as a colleague does not want Chan to leave, but as a friend is very supportive of her decision, because their friendship is beyond politics.
Chan is a founding member of the Civic Party, Vice Chairman of Foreign Affairs and a former artist. She has been in the Legislative Council since 2008, when she partnered with former Civic Party leader Audrey Eu and others to run in the 2008 Legislative Council elections, where she was elected with a high number of votes. In 2010, Tanya Chan, along with four then legislators, including Alan Leong, Wong Yuk-man, Albert Chan, and Leung Kwok-hung, resigned from the Legislative Council, and then ran in the by-election, because Hong Kong does not have a referendum law, they want to take advantage of the by-election so that all the people of Hong Kong for a de facto “referendum”, the referendum topic for the “realization of real life”. Universal suffrage, abolition of functional constituencies”, and was successfully elected until 2012.
However, Chan lost the 2012 general election of the Legislative Council, and returned to the legislature in 2016, because Chan was sentenced to probation in the case of the nine children in Occupy Central, according to the Legislative Council Ordinance and the Basic Law, Chan was sentenced to five years from the day of sentencing can not run, including the 2020 Legislative Council elections, Chan’s term will end on Wednesday (30), the convenor of the pro-democracy camp also stepped down, the new convenor will be the chairman of the Democratic Party Hu Zhiwei.
Chen’s more controversial incidents, including her participation in Occupy Central in 2014 and was charged with “inciting others to make a public nuisance” and “inciting others to incite a public nuisance”, the case was dismissed in January 2012. Last year’s trial, when Chen Suk Chuang’s brain had a meningioma that required surgery, and his life was threatened, Chen Suk Chuang was remanded and sentenced to 8 months in jail and 2 years probation. During Chen’s term of office, for many years asked the government to establish a “tree law” to protect and check indiscriminate cutting of trees, but the law has not yet been passed. In addition, Chen was also the convenor of the “co-location” and urged the Hong Kong government to withdraw the proposal.
