U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in an interview with Italian media on Friday (Oct. 2) that Huawei’s investment is not a conventional market practice but a predatory trade, which should be banned by any country.
According to Reuters, Pompeo said in an interview with the Italian newspaper La Repubblica on Friday after a two-day visit to Italy that Huawei’s investment is not private because they have state subsidies from the Chinese government, and in this sense, they are different from many other companies, they are not engaged in transparent, free business transactions.
He said that Huawei’s investment is a predatory deal and no country should or can approve such a deal. He also called for Europe and the United States to work together to stop the Chinese Communist Party’s international plans.
Huawei has always denied any allegations made against it by the United States.
During his visit to Italy, Pompeo expressed his concerns to Rome about China’s plans to expand its economic influence in Italy and warned Italy to remain vigilant. He told a joint news conference with Italian Foreign Minister Di Maio on Wednesday that he and his Italian counterpart “discussed at length U.S. concerns about the Chinese Communist Party’s attempts to use its economic presence in Italy for its own strategic purposes” and that “the United States at the same time urged the Italian government to consider carefully Technology companies with ties to the Chinese Communist Party pose a threat to Italy’s national security and the privacy of its citizens.” Foreign Minister Di Maio said Italy understands the U.S. concerns about China’s 5G technology, is fully aware of each country’s responsibility to deal with security issues, and said it will carefully review the contracts.
Also on Wednesday, Huawei Italy president Luigi De Vecchis held a press conference in Rome where he said Huawei is prepared to undergo any inspections to prove that its technology is secure and does not pose any risk to countries that will use Huawei equipment in the construction of their 5G networks.
In addition, Mr. Peño, who is visiting Croatia from Rome after President Trump and his wife confirmed the infection, said Friday that he and his wife tested negative for the new crown, saying he last saw the president on Sept. 15 and that he prayed for a speedy recovery for the president and the first lady.
