On October 3, President Donald Trump announced that he and his wife, Melania Trump, have tested positive for a novel coronavirus. The White House announced that Trump had been transferred to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Maryland on October 3. In response, Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga tweeted on October 3 that he was “very worried” about President Trump and his wife, Melania, who have been infected with the new coronavirus, and wished them a speedy recovery.
Kan wrote in English and Japanese, “I hope that both of you will quickly overcome the neo-crown and resume your daily lives. Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Shigeru stated at a press conference on September 29 that the foreign ministers of Japan, the United States, Australia, and India will meet in Tokyo on October 6 to confirm cooperation in realizing the “free and open Indo-Pacific vision” advocated by former Prime Minister Abe and U.S. President Donald Trump. Kan is expected to meet with the foreign ministers of the four countries.
U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is expected to visit Japan as scheduled, but Kan will still receive a courtesy call from him. Pompeo will also convey President Trump’s greetings to Kan. On October 2, the State Department held a telephone briefing on Pompeo’s upcoming visit to Japan, Mongolia, and South Korea from October 4-8, and his participation in the U.S.-Australia-Japan-India quadrilateral foreign ministers’ meeting in Tokyo on October 6.
During the conference call, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs William Stilwell, referring to Prime Minister Kan’s recent appointment, noted that it was an excellent time to reaffirm the relationship between the two countries, which is based on shared values and worldviews. He was asked twice by reporters whether Pompeo would make a surprise visit to Taiwan or use the trip to meet with Taiwan’s leaders on a video screen in the midst of the U.S.-China confrontation and the dire situation in the Taiwan Strait. Stillwell said “no further trips to be announced at this time”. However, Pompeo said on February 2 that he is continuing to study whether the schedule for the trip to Asia is appropriate. He said he might change some of the schedule, and on October 2, Trump announced that he was infected with the new crown, and Pompeo said that day that he and his wife’s nucleic acid tests were negative.
According to the Associated Press on Oct. 2, Pompeo said that he and his wife were visiting Croatia that day, and they tested negative for neocon 20 minutes before the plane landed in Dubrovnik. But does Pompeo count as a close contact? Will there be any changes in the results of future tests? His reception by various countries was remarkable for any change in reception.
