The U.S. government said Monday (Oct. 5) that it would not tolerate the “failure” of a member state of the World Health Organization to provide accurate, complete, and timely information on disease outbreaks. This is clearly a criticism of China.
U.S. Assistant Secretary of Health and Human Services Admiral Brett Giroir, of the Public Health Service Officer Corps, also called for action on WHO reforms proposed by the United States, Germany, France, and Chile, among other countries, in a speech to the WHO’s Executive Board.
Giroir, along with the European Union and Australia, called for the launch of a WHO-led international mission to China to investigate the source of the new coronavirus that emerged late last year. Earlier, Mike Ryan, WHO’s head of emergency services, said the organization has submitted a list of experts investigating the origin of the new coronavirus to China for consideration.
The Trump administration announced this summer that it would withdraw from the WHO next July, and Washington has criticized the WHO for refusing to begin reforms independent of China’s Communist government. This is the first time the WHO has held a two-day executive board meeting since the United States announced the decision.
